[8:18]

The section opens with a cost-benefit analysis of suffering in relation to the glory that God has in store for his children. In Paul’s estimation, the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared to the blessings that await the saints beyond this life. The full magnificence of future glory has yet to be revealed; even so, Paul is adamant that no amount of pain or grief in this world should deter us from pressing toward this goal. There is simply no equivalence between time and eternity (2 Cor 4:17). Besides, it is the Father’s desire to “Christify” his children—that is, to make them more like Christ in his suffering and death, so that they might also share in his resurrection (as stated in Phil 3:10–11).28
