Steven looked at the clock for fifth time in the past ten minutes. He swore the hands weren’t even moving. Time was simply stuck at half past three, and he was stuck in an endless loop of jitters.

Ginny was supposedly dropping by soon to meet up with Cocoa, and even though Steven knew she wasn’t going to be there to see him, he’d been bouncing around the shelter as if he was the one getting the visitor.

He ducked behind one of the desks to check his phone so the boss didn’t give him grief about it. His messages were frustratingly all old, but that didn’t stop him from scrolling through the conversation he’d had with her last night. When he’d roused from the impromptu nap at her house the day before, she was out like a light, her breath softly blowing the loose strands of her hair. She’d clung to that thick quilt like it was a teddy bear, and he’d sat for a moment just watching her lips, her shoulders move up and down, her content expression…

All he hoped was that he hadn’t taken away something very special. It seemed a shame to wait so long for a first kiss to only have it with someone who was using her to keep face. But something had taken over him when he lied next to her, and he suddenly was so sick of being the nice guy. He wanted to be a little selfish.

Movement flickered in his peripheral, and he pushed his phone into his pocket and greeted the family with a smile.

“Hello. What can I do for you?”

“We’d like to look at the dogs,” the woman said, swinging her joined hand with her son back and forth. The kid was probably around seven or eight, and his eager eyes peered around Steven to the barking in the back.

“Sure thing,” he said. “Just need a driver’s license and car keys if you plan on taking any of them outside for a bit.”

“Okay,” the mom said, and then he led them back to the pups. The boy walked right up to Cocoa’s kennel, peering in with wondering eyes.

Steven’s heart stuttered, and he about told them that Cocoa was being considered for adoption with someone else, but the boy looked up at his mom and shook his head.

“That one is boring,” he said, and Steven held back a laugh. As soon as the kid and his mom moved on to look at the others, Steven stepped up to Cocoa’s door.

“Hey, girl,” he said. She huddled in the corner, shaking. Her eyes drooped, her ears back, and her tail tucked underneath her. If there were awards for the saddest dog alive, he was sure she’d have it in the bag.

Steven frowned and eyed the clock again. It was still too early to take her out, but he didn’t care. The poor girl needed some fresh air.

He headed out front to make sure there was someone to help the mom and the boy when they were ready, and then grabbed a leash and some doggie treats.
