TWELVE

Lochlan carefully tugged the grate back over the hole even as he knew it wouldn’t stop anyone from tracking them. Until they camouflaged their scent, it would always give them away. He doubted Luna would like the next part of his plan, because it would involve them getting filthy.

“Now?” she whispered, her eyes glowing in the gloom. A gloom his eyesight had no problem penetrating, one of the tolerable side effects from the experiments.

“Follow me.” He didn’t actually have a clue where to go, more a general knowledge of sewer systems. They all had to flow somewhere, and best of all, being deep underground and made of concrete made them impenetrable to signals. Because, despite what Luna claimed, he now had no doubt she bore a chip.

To her credit, she didn’t complain as they slogged through the muck, mostly rainwater rather than the type that got flushed down toilets. He ensured they walked in the watery sludge, which would hide their tracks, twisting and turning enough that even he couldn’t have found his way back.

They didn’t hear any signs of pursuit. Glances back didn’t show any lights, though they weren’t using anything to illuminate their path either. Rather than complain about the dark, Luna followed, one hand on his shoulder to guide her.

The silence pressed thickly on them, which made her voice all the more jarring when she said, “You were right about them tracking me.”

He almost fell over in shock. “Should I mark that admission on a calendar?” he quipped, because he doubted she did that often.

“I know when I’m wrong. And in this case, it’s a good thing you were around.”

“Not going to call me paranoid anymore?”

“Oh, I’ll still call you paranoid.” She uttered a low laugh. “But rather than argue, I will listen to your advice from now on.”

“Less advice and more years of learning how to live off the radar unnoticed.”

“The Feral Pack ranch wasn’t well guarded,” she remarked.

“Because, for a long time, it wasn’t needed. The ranch was a safe place for those looking to lie low.”

“Not anymore. Now that it has Pack status, it’s not a secret anymore.”

“Yeah. Given our newfound fame, I was debating whether to stay or not when shit hit the fan.”

“Knowing the traitor gave out information on the smaller packs, leading to their eradication, I guess saying you’re safe would be a lie. Everyone is at risk until we find and eliminate him.” A low promise.

Rather than dwell on mistakes and lies and traitors, he said, “When you shift, are you always in that hybrid shape?”

She snorted. “That’s not a hybrid, and you know it. I’m a monster.”

“I wouldn’t go so far as to say that. More like a throwback to a more prehistoric version of ourselves.”

“Are you calling me a cavewolf?” An incredulous note ended her query.

“Well, you do have the saber teeth.”

“Don’t remind me,” she muttered.

“How many people know about your modified wolf?”

“No one.”

“What? Impossible. You were an enforcer. You said yourself that the Lykosium saved you. Someone has to know.
