Chapter Nine
âItâs amazing.â With tears rolling down her cheeks and her kids clinging to her, Nancy gave a huge smile that erased the strain and tension from her face. âHow do I say thank you for all this?â
Gemma figured her reaction was worth everything theyâd struggled with.
âYour thanks will be your enjoyment of your home.â Jake grinned and pointed at Gemma. âBut if I got the colors wrong or whatever, blame her. Sheâs the decorator.â
âNot decorator. I only suggested a few things,â Gemma said, eager to deflect attention from her part in the renovation. âJakeâs the one who got it done.â
âThank you both. There isnât one thing Iâd change.â Nancy hugged The Havenâs handyman for what Gemma figured was about the fiftieth time, then said, âI donât know where the funds to do this came from. Or those that paid for our trip for Jeremyâs surgery. Or for the gorgeous trees and flowers planted all around the place. Amazing.â She began listing all the changes but then shook her head when there were too many. âI wish I knew whoâs paying for everything so I could say a proper thank you.â
âEnjoy your home,â Jake said. âThatâs all the thanks anyone wants. That and seeing Jeremy get the care he needs.â
âHis prognosis couldnât be better. He wonât have to hold his hand over his mouth anymore.â Again tears welled in Nancyâs eyes. Baby Sophie pressed her face into her motherâs neck as if to console her.
âThatâs what we need to thank God for.â Gemma stuffed down her desperation to know if sheâd chosen appropriately for Nancyâs quilt room.
âI know how you cân thank people.â Alexa, her hand firmly holding Donnieâs, stood in front of Nancy.
âHow, sweetie?â the woman asked with a smile.
âMake âem a quilt. You got lotsa stuff to do that anâ that big new machine.â She gave Gemma a quick glance.
âAlexa, honey, quilts are expensive and they take a lot of work,â Gemma explained, praying the child hadnât figured out she was responsible for ordering the longarm quilting machine, the big deal as Jake called it, that now sat in the quilting room.
âAlexa, you are a very smart cookie.â Nancy hugged the child until she wiggled to be free. âItâs an amazing machine and I can hardly wait to use it. Thank you for thinking of that.â
âWelcome.â Alexa pursed her lips. âKurt usta say God gived us stuff so weâd use it ta make other people happy.â
âHe was right. I can hardly wait to get some time in that quilting room and try out everything.â Nancyâs longing look was interrupted by Jeremyâs plea for a snack.
âThe kids have missed you and Jeremy.â Gemma laid a hand on Alexaâs shoulder. âWeâll go now so you can spend some time together.â
âOkay. But tomorrow Iâm going to have a big party and everyone who had any part in fixing this house is invited. Can you spread the word, Jake?â Nancy asked, smiling when he nodded. âThank you.â
Moments later they left Nancy inspecting the new childrenâs play set that had been installed in her backyard.
