1/8th-Note Shuffle Ride Patterns

The 1/8th-note shuffle is a rhythmic formation that consists of 1/8th-note triplets with the middle notes missing.

These can be tricky to feel at first. Try setting your metronome to around 150 bpm and hearing each click as a triplet 1/8th note. This means that three clicks are one beat. You can then play the first and third click while missing out the middle one.

Count out loud,

“Trip – er – let Trip – er – let Trip – er – let Trip – er – let”.

with one syllable per click.

Next, replace the word ‘trip’ with the beat count, so now say,

“ONE – er – let Two – er – let three – er – let Four – er – let”.

Finally, miss out the middle syllable, “er”

“One – Let Two – Let Three – Let Four – let”.

Listen carefully to the audio before playing the following examples.

Here’s the counting of 1/8th-note shuffle pattern. Play it on closed hi-hats.
