* * * *

Edward wasn’t really sure where or when he had lost his mind. Maybe it was between getting shot and questioning Mason. It might even have been when he stepped onto the back porch to get some fresh air. It seemed the Southern air was a little more alive with the night’s sound, and maybe he had lost his mind then.

Whenever it was, he was sitting across from Isabelle, enthralled with her laugh. When was the last time he had ever been enthralled with anything? Never. That’s when. It had always been about him. It was easier that way and feelings never became tangled. Life was smoother when he didn’t have anyone to think about.

But Isabelle stayed on his mind.

Stupidity was starting to sink into his mind. Not only did he not trust women, but Isabelle should be the last person on his get closer list. Edward wasn’t afraid of Enrique, but he knew the protective brother would not stand by and allow Edward to have his way with little sis.

Edward watched as Isabelle stood, walked around the table a little unsteadily, and then scooted into his lap. He sat there stiffly. Edward wasn’t sure what to do. Taking advantage of a drunken woman was not his kink.

She threw her arms around his neck and smiled at him.

“You really shouldn’t drink, princess.” His hand molded to her back when Isabelle leaned too far back, nearly falling off of him. “Easy there.”

Isabelle licked her bottom lip and Edward’s eyes were forced to watch. How could he not? They were pretty lips and looked just as soft as he remembered them being when he had kissed her earlier. He still wasn’t sure what drove him to do something like that. Edward needed to get his head out of his ass and leave Isabelle the hell alone.

She was bad news for someone who didn’t want to be tangled with anyone. Isabelle was a woman who a guy committed to. She wasn’t one-night stand material. But Edward wasn’t long-term material.

They would not work.

They could not work.

“Kiss me.”

Edward, as much as it pained him, held her shoulders back. “You need to sober up, Isabelle, before I take you back, or your brother and I just might end up killing each other.”

“Nah,” she said as she leaned her head against his shoulder. Edward allowed her. The gesture was harmless enough. “You wouldn’t hurt my brother.”

She didn’t know him too well then. Edward would do whatever it took to defend himself. But he knew she lived in a world Edward had never known. Her walls were built with the loving touch of a family who cared about her.

Edward’s walls were made of barbed wire and the cruel hand of his past. She had no clue how truly lucky she was. Edward rested his chin on her head, glancing around the shit hole bar, wondering just how bad this war was going to get. Whether he wanted to admit it or not, he was a part of it just for being changeling.
