Jae rushed through the front door of Pet Haven Veterinary Clinic with her bag of donuts, letting in a blast of arctic air. But Nick didnât bother to look up. He sat on a lime-green vinyl bench. His body leaned forward, his head hanging down and hair fisted in his hands. She had been watching the livestreaming of Nick and Tiagoâs dogsled ride when it cut out with that awful yelp that kept repeating in her head. Maybe it was a little desperate, but after waiting, messaging NixDogQuest, and hearing nothing, she finally broke down and called Ronnie, who didnât need any prompting to spill what she knew.
Kasha was hurt. Nick was with her while Ronnie, Peter, and Tiago were at Nickâs taking care of the other dogs. She practically begged Jae to check on Nick.
Jae pushed aside her own bruised feelings and need for self-preservation and rushed over.
She sat next to Nick who finally lifted his head. âJae? What are you doing here?â
âI sawâI mean Ronnie told me something was wrong with Kasha. We didnât want you to be alone. What happened?â
âShe was running and reinjured her leg. Not only thatâ¦she has bone cancer. Lena isâ¦â He winced and looked away. âAmputating her leg as we speak.â
âOh, Nick.â Her voice caught at seeing his misery firsthand. She laid her fingers on his arm. âIâm so sorry.â
âWhat is she going to do?â he said softly. âI mean, that dog loves to run, loves to race. How is she going to do that now?â He rubbed his forehead, a slight tremor in his hand.
The worry and concern for his dog made Jae fall even harder for Nick Dahlquist. He might still be brokenhearted over Vivie, but right now he needed a friend, and Jae could at least be that for him. She settled into the seat. âSheâll adapt. And dogs are probably better at that than people. Youâll see.â
âAdapt.â He shook his head.
âYeah. Havenât you seen three-legged dogs before? Kasha will learn how to use her other three legs and sheâll be running again before you know it.â
âI donât knowâ¦â
âListen. I donât know about being an amputee, but I do know what itâs like to have life change in the blink of an eye. I grew up in the military, remember?â
He looked at her, understanding pouring forth from the depths of his blue eyes. âThat was hard, huh? Moving all the time?â
She wanted to reassure Nick, but the simple question took her by surprise and hit deep. âYeah. It was.â
It was hard to always be the new girl. Hard to see everyone else fitting in perfectly and never quite finding that for herself. It was hard to pick up and leave again when the newness wore off and the place started becoming comfortable.
Then again, her daddyâs words whispered to her heart.
It hurts to say goodbye, Jae Lynn, but it gives you the opportunity to say hello to a whole new place. Think of the opportunities and the new friends youâre gonna make.
