Chapter 9

Hector was standing at the edge of the barrier when she spied him. There was something so profoundly sad that instead of waiting for Remy to come with her, she went to the man. He looked as if he had something in his hands and the closer she got to him, the more afraid she was.

“He will die.” Hector held the child she could see now out to her. “He is all I have left in the world, and I don’t want to lose him.”

Stepping over the barrier, she took the child from his father’s hands. Skylar wasn’t sure he was going to give him up, but as soon as she touched him, the child looked up at her and smiled. She knew then that she had to do something.

“If he crosses over, I will never see him again.” Skylar looked at Hector, then at the child. “You have a team of medical men. I have seen to it that you have the best. Take him to them. Please. If he should die by crossing over, it will be a much less painful death than the one that awaits him at my home.”

“His mother, she has died?” Hector sobbed and fell to his knees. The man was crying so hard that he woke the boy in her arms, but only for a moment. “Hector, what are you doing to help him?”

“Everything. I have hired so many doctors to see to him. His mother lost her mind at the end, and she screamed in pain so much that I had to leave. It hurt me to hear her, hurts me more that her son, our child will suffer the same way. I know not what is killing him, and neither do the doctors on our realm.” Skylar saw Remy coming with two men dressed in white. She had no idea how he knew, but she was so grateful for his help that she nearly cried herself. Hector watched as his son was taken away. “He did not die.”

“No. I’m not sure what you expected or what we did, but we’ll do everything in our power to save him.” He nodded and looked at her. “Your wife, when did she pass?”

“Yesterday morning. I was with her. Her body was eaten by whatever is taking our son. I don’t know what to do now. All I had was these two. What will I do now, Skylar?” She told him she had no idea, but she would help. “There is something that I would ask of you. It is not a huge thing, but something…will you not tell anyone that Ruben is here? I should…I have no idea why, but I think him safer for no one knowing.”

“You think someone there is hurting your son?” Skylar looked at Remy when he spoke. She could almost feel his pain and wanted to go to him. But he stood there as hard and as stiff as she’d ever seen him, and she knew he was thinking of his own son.
