Taking a Drive on the Wild Side

The silver lining was that the case landed on my desk as a reckless driving with injury instead of a vehicular homicide. One of the questions I had for the victim was, under the circumstances, what in the world was an intelligent, educated woman like her doing in that car in the first place?

The victim, Jeanette, tells me the story. She met the defendant, Dane, ironically enough, at a red light. She heard him before she saw him as he rolled up in a Corvette painted like a race car, with an engine as loud as the music blaring from his car speakers.

Jeanette had never met anyone like Dane and was captivated by his accounts of life in the fast lane. She had always been fascinated with race cars, loved watching the video footage from his helmet cam, and wondered what it would be like to actually be out on the track. She found out sooner than she anticipated.

Where do you suppose Dane took her on their first date? To a nice restaurant? The opera? Nope. To a local speedway after hours, where a quick dinner of fried chicken and beer is followed by a terrifying spin in his race car, her screams drowned out by the heavy metal music blasting from his stereo. Notwithstanding the fear of the ride, or perhaps because of it, Jeanette agrees to see him again. And again. Until one night, his luck ran out.

On that fateful evening, Dane misjudged a corner of the track and rolled the car. Jeanette was injured when the seatbelt failed and she was thrown into the windshield. Dane later admitted that he knew the seatbelt was broken. Looking back, Jeanette recalls that he didn’t even ask her to fasten it.
