Christian: Okay… So these ideas were floating around in society in general?

Theologian: They were, which means they weren’t unique to Paul’s thinking, or his theology.

Christian: But couldn’t Paul have borrowed these ideas, since he talks about all kinds of things in his letter: mystery cults, Dionysus worship, fertility rites, you name it.

Theologian: How familiar do you think the Corinthians were with Jewish law?

Christian: Hmmm… Not very, I assume. But they would have known about the Roman customs, since Corinth was a Roman colony.

Theologian: But should we assume that just because the Romans thought women shouldn’t speak in public that Paul agreed?

Christian: He could have.

Theologian: Of course he could have, but what about the law? Is Paul referring to the Roman law?

Christian: You’re right, he wouldn’t have. But what if Paul is talking about spiritual gifts in general; that women aren’t given gifts that would give them authority over men?

Theologian: It is true that all the spiritual gifts come with their own kind of authority. Apostles have authority to build the body of Christ until it becomes mature, prophets and teachers have the authority to teach, miracle workers have the authority to perform miracles, healers have the authority to heal, those who speak in tongues and those who interpret have the authority to do so, those able to help other and those with gifts of administration have the authority to help and administer. Other members must respect the authority, and not say, “I don't need you!”[117]

Christian: But if all gifts come with authority, are there gifts that do not place women in situations in which they exercise authority over men?

Theologian: Naturally.

Christian: Then we have solved the problem!

Theologian: Not quite, for where does the Bible say women aren’t given all the gifts?

Christian: Um… I don’t know. But can women really be given all the gifts, if women aren’t allowed to have authority over men?

Theologian: Perhaps the problem is the concept that women aren’t allowed to have authority over men?

Christian: So you’re saying that women are given all the gifts?

Theologian: Well, why not? The purpose of the spiritual gifts is to prepare God’s people for works of service.
