Using the set-up shown in the diagrams on this page, it was just a matter of waiting until two Goldfinches perched on either side of the carefully chosen sock.

A particularly simple set-up: the birds will inevitably perch on the washing line before dropping down to the table. Think carefully about what you hang from the line (colourful is good and perhaps anything with a bird theme).

A Robin obliges by perching next to the colourful sock – and looking in the ‘right’ direction. There is a greater chance of the birds perching in the right place if you have a short stretch of washing line.
