We know smoking’s a risky business, but just how does it compare with other life-threatening activities?

There are lies, damned lies and statistics. That said, we all use them in assessing life’s risks. Take a group of 1,000 average 20-year-old smokers and see what life holds in store for them. Of these 250 will die from smoking-related diseases between 35 and 69 and 250 will die from smoking-related diseases in old age. In effect, if you smoke, you have a one in two chance of dying from it.
