1 Mark the tie points. Mark points on your quilt about 5" (12.5cm) apart in any configuration you like, such as a grid, a brick pattern, or centered in key points on your patchwork. (Instead of a ruler, you can also simply use your fist as a guide.) Either way, mark the points with large Xs using a fabric marker.
2 Thread the needle. Thread your needle with the string; leave one end long and fold the end at the needle’s eye over about 3" (7.5cm). Working from the front of the quilt top, make a stitch at your first marked point, and leave a long thread tail. Continue jumping from X to X, making one stitch at a time until all the Xs are stitched.
