CHAPTER ELEVEN

Oh my god! I’m at Axel Christensen’s house. Kerrigan’s chest tightened, and she couldn’t breathe. The tension between them had been mounting, and she managed to push him away, but she never expected him to resort to an act of desperation this bold and daring.

The large heavy garage door screeched closed, and pitch-blackness surrounded them. Kerrigan couldn’t see anything, her eyes wide and searching. Her heart pounded so hard, she knew he could hear the hard thud against her chest. Cold air blew from the vent, sending a shiver up her spine and the goose bumps that had risen on her arms multiplied. Wrapping her arms around herself, she shielded herself from the arctic blast and him. “I assume this is where you live. Why are we at your house? Did you forget something here?” She asked hastily, the nervous tension clinging to the end of her words sounded louder in the dark.

He opened the driver’s side door, cut off the engine and faced her. The overhead light cast an eerie glow. “I need to be alone with you. I thought we could enjoy dinner. My housekeeper Emma rivals some of the best gourmet chefs in town.” He covered her folded hands resting in her lap and gently caressed her fingers. The sensation of his touch made her tingle from her fingertips, flowed through her core and down to her feet. She stopped breathing. She wished he didn’t affect her that way.

“And, I thought you could use a little fun. You work much too hard. You’re always the first one in and the last one to leave.”

She frowned at him, her forehead furrowed—a question held in her eyes. “Axel, I…”

He continued, halting her words. “I pay attention to everything you do. You told me that you moved here for a change. I won’t let you slip back into bad habits.”

His concern penetrated her heart. “I appreciate your looking out for me.”

The tone of his voice softened, and his eyes burrowed into her flesh. “I also hoped we could spend some time together getting to know each other a little more, talking—just talking.”

Despite his protective nature, the danger warning in her mind rang out like a storm siren signaling impending disaster. “I thought we were already getting to know each other. I don’t understand why you’re doing this.”

“I want us do something together that isn’t work-related. We had fun hanging out at the baseball game. This is for us both.” Although he spoke with confidence, his words came out winded, his knee bounced restlessly, and his eyes darkened with an intensity she hadn’t seen before. Unmasked, his anxiety took the form of perspiration lightly glistening across his forehead. He shifted in his seat. “And, because I don’t want you on the roads so late at night, I’ve arranged the guest suite for you to sleep here overnight. I’ll take you back to the office tomorrow for your car.”

She swallowed hard. “Axel, I don’t know what to say. Do I have any choice?” Okay Kerrigan, Axel wants you.
