“Relax. No one will notice you’re staying over,” Nero assures me as we walk into his home, the sprawling house situated in the best part of town. Being a demon has its perks.

Right. No one will notice. That’s what he said when I donned a pair of his much larger pants, Nero having stashed multiple uniforms in the police car. Wright, that observant son-of-a-bitch, noticed immediately, asking if I had pissed myself.

I couldn’t say jack shit because the truth was worse. I’d allowed Nero to eat out my ass and jack me off, and I liked it, loved it. I yearn for him to do it again.

I grip my blue canvas overnight bag tightly, determined to play babysitter, having decided a demon partner hell-bent on revenge wasn’t the best being to leave alone. “You’re evil.”

“I’m a demon. Me being evil is a given.” Nero prowls along the hallway, and I follow him, gaping at my surroundings. His place is surprisingly sparsely decorated, the minimalist space giving no indication he’s been alive for centuries. “Chris gave me that.” He flings his hand at a black leather couch.

“Your friend gave you a couch?” I scowl. Friends give friends golf clubs, a hard time, and supersonic wedgies. They don’t give friends big-assed furniture.

“My dead friend.” Nero stops short, and I bump into a solid wall of manly demon. “I’ll never understand humans. Chris was the nicest, kindest person. Why would someone want to kill him?”

Is Nero serious? He sounds serious. “It’s obvious,” I mumble.

“What?” He turns around and glares at me. “What is obvious?”

Damn demon hearing. “He was… well… you know.” I wave my hand at Nero.

“What was he, Sarge?” Nero looms over me, a frighteningly hard glint in his red eyes. “Tell me what he was,” he barks out like a fuckin’ drill sergeant, demanding an answer he already knows.

My face heats to the point of pain. “He was gay.” There, I said it. “And he was open about it.” Nero’s eyes burn brighter. “If he had been more covert about it, maybe waiting until after the surgery to dress like a girl, he might --” Nero’s hands curl into fists and I gulp, knowing the nose-flattening damage those big mitts could deliver.

“He might… what?” he growls. “Be alive? You don’t know shit, Sarge. For one thing, Chris was transgender. She didn’t dress like a girl. She was a girl. Maybe if you got out of your cozy closet once in a while, you’d know that. And for another, there’s no proof that this is a hate crime. None.” Lines etch around his mouth.

“I…” I don’t know what to say.

“Chris had a family, friends, and obviously at least one enemy, just like everyone else. She went to school, worked a job, had relationships, loved, laughed, lived.” Nero tilts his face upward and stares at the white crown moldings, his hands clenching and unclenching. “Not everything revolves around sexuality.”

“It does for me,” I admit quietly, needing to say something to make this right.
