Eight o’clock.

I looked at the time display on the phone and nervously tapped my pen against my desk.

Right at this moment, Luc was probably walking into the lobby of the Mark Hopkins and heading back to the bar to meet Lydia.

Even though I’d worked at AshComm forever (at least that’s the way it seemed), Luc had never met my boss. The only thing he knew about her was what I’d told him—that she was a fair, hardworking woman who made my life a living hell. Okay, I might have intimated that she was also occasionally bitchy and colder than Santa’s butt. A fairly accurate portrayal, actually.

I bit my lip, wondering how he’d react to seeing her. She was the kind of woman who made men walk into parking meters as she walked by on the street. Would Luc be as bedazzled?

I shook my head. Probably not. She wasn’t his type, except for being tall. And blond. And utterly bewitching.

I stood up. I couldn’t take it anymore. I thought I’d be able to get some serious work done this evening, but for the past half hour all I’d managed to do was worry about how Lydia’s meeting with Luc would go. But I could do that just as easily at home, and I was hungry, so I called it a night. There was a can of tuna with my name written on it.

I’d shut down my workstation, cleared my desk, and was waiting for the elevator when I felt someone walk up behind me.

I stiffened, recalling all the stats on lone women being attacked at work after hours. Luc had made me take a self-defense class eons ago but the only thing I could remember was hitting the groin, which was a little difficult with your back to your attacker.

“We meet again.”

“Oh.” I practically dissolved in relief at the familiar gravelly voice. “You scared me,” I said, turning around.

Drake smiled, his dimple flashing at me. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to frighten you. I didn’t expect to see anyone else here this time of night. Even Lydia’s gone for the evening.”

Tell me something I don’t know. “I had a couple reports to finish up.”

He gazed at me steadily, a blunt finger rubbing his five o’clock–shadowed cheek. “You work hard.”

No kidding. About time someone noticed. “Well—you know.”

The elevator arrived and Drake held the door open for me. He hit the button for the lobby once we were both in.

I wondered what it’d be like to be with a man who was so strong and confident. It was comforting in a way, but I imagined it’d get old fast.

No wonder Lydia just wanted a sperm donor. Most of the men of her ilk were probably like the man next to me. I grinned, thinking of Lydia with Drake. That’d be something I’d pay to see.

“You look cheerful.”

I pushed my glasses up and glanced at Drake. “Excuse me?”

“You’re smiling.”

“I was just thinking how ironic it was that over twenty-five hundred left-handed people are killed each year from using products made for right-handed people,” I lied.
