The following day I had the good fortune to stand at the altar again. For the first time in ten months.

On February 25 a train took me toward the misery of the camp again. I will not describe here what my feelings were.

It was good I had no inkling that the real hell was only about to begin.

During the trip the thought of fleeing crossed my mind again and again.

It was out of the question though. In Paris my brother had provided a guarantee that I would return, and what was it that Friedrichs had said to me as I left the Villa Pauly: “You come from a large family, don’t you?” That was clear enough.

So I gritted my teeth and was standing at the camp gate, as my orders stated, on February 25 at 5 p.m. on the dot, after choking down three hard-boiled eggs.

“Reporting back from leave,” I say.

The man is so amazed that he stands there for a moment open-mouthed before he scuttles away to get instructions...
