Chapter 30
The minute Elizabeth left the room, a feeling of emptiness consumed him. Darcy stood, motionless, in total shock. He could not believe that the events of the last hour had actually happened. This had to be a nightmare. How could she do this? His heart felt as if it was being crushed inside his chest. He could not breathe. He could not think. His world was spiralling out of control and there was nothing he could do about it.
After several minutes of desperately trying to regain some sense of composure, Mr. Bennet entered the library. Darcy, looking defeated and utterly devastated looked up at Mr. Bennet and asked, “She told you?”
“Yes, she did.” He patted Darcy on the back and continued, “My boy, all is not lost. She loves you, of that I am sure. Lizzy is headstrong. She thinks she is doing the right thing by you and your sister. Although her decision is rash, her intentions are honourable. I hope you can see that.”
“Sir, forgive me for my frankness, but the only honourable thing she can do for me and my sister is to marry me! Georgiana and I need her.”
“Son, be patient; she is not thinking clearly. Give her some time. I am confident she will come around. Perhaps it would be best to leave and give her some distance for a while. I will tell her you that you have returned to Netherfield.”
“I know you are right, but if I go now, it seems that I will leave behind any chance I have at changing her mind the moment I walk out that door.”
“I understand, but have faith. Never underestimate the power of faith.” He patted Darcy on the back again. With Mr. Bennet’s encouragement, Darcy reluctantly left Longbourn.
After speaking with her father, Elizabeth had run directly to her room, where she remained, curled into herself on her bed. She could not stop crying. Not knowing what had just transpired, Jane tried to provide some comfort to her sister. Although Lizzy loved her sister dearly, nothing Jane did for her was going to take away the emptiness she felt the minute she left him in the library. She had not been parted from him a quarter of an hour and already her heart ached for him. She knew she was doing the right thing, though, no matter how much it hurt. Time would heal their wounds, but it would not change the disgrace she would bring to the Darcys if she went forward with the marriage.
Darcy returned to Netherfield and went straight to his bedchamber. He was not in the mood to socialize, and he did not want the others to know that anything was wrong. He preferred them to think that he had not returned from the Bennets yet. He poured himself a brandy; right then he just needed something to take away the pain. How was he supposed to go on without her? His entire future, his dreams, his life had been imploded by her words.
