THINGS THAT WORK ESPECIALLY WELL ON MATURE FACES
Anyone can use these, but they come into their own on older women.
PORE BALMS
These are temporary fillers, plugging pores with harmless silicone and creating a smoother base for make-up. After skincare, you dab them on with your middle finger and pat, don’t wipe, or the balm may disintegrate. Then smooth on foundation. Clinique, Sensai, Dior, Benefit, L’Oréal Paris and Clarins make good ones.
A HAND CREAM WITH SUNSCREEN
People often protect their faces from sun damage while completely ignoring their hands, but applying sunscreen is very wise if you would like to avoid age spots. If you have existing spots, they will usually become much darker in hot weather, so slather on plenty of sunscreen before going out. At night, use a handcream that contains proven anti-ageing ingredients like retinol, to treat any damage that has already been done.
LIP PLUMPERS
These plump lips and fill in fine lines simultaneously and can work rather well, albeit temporarily. Some tingle when first applied, which can be annoying, but they don’t cause any harm so it’s worth waiting for the sensation to pass. Apply after base make-up and leave a few minutes before applying lipstick. I love Guerlain’s because it doesn’t tingle, but Molton Brown and Laura Mercier’s are also good.
EYESHADOW PRIMERS
I am devoted to these. You know when your eyeliner transfers onto your eyelids? This is a common problem as we get older and eyelids begin to hood and can be helped enormously by a shadow primer. After your base but before eye make-up, tap a small amount of eye primer over the entire lid. Leave to set for a few moments before applying shadow. The best eye primers are by Urban Decay, Smashbox, Tom Ford, Stila, Clinique and Bare Minerals. Avoid coloured ones; what you need is a translucent, matte, universal shade that disappears on the skin.
LIP LINERS
People are snotty about lip liner. This is a huge mistake. Liner helps stop lipstick bleed and defines a blurring natural lip line (both common in mature women). Your pencil should always match your lipstick (that dark line/pale lip look of yore makes everyone look horrific) but if you can’t find a match, opt for an invisible wax one. Body Shop, Estée Lauder, MAC, Cargo, Lipstick Queen and pro beauty supply stores (see Specialist Shops) all sell them. Trace the pencil around your natural lip line then fill in with lipstick.
PRIMER
Primers are great on older skins as they fix a number of common problems. They form a grippy base for make-up to stop it migrating during a hot flash, they smooth any unevenness on the surface of the skin and, if you choose cleverly, they can bring back light to the face via light-reflecting particles. My favourites for all three are by Dior, Laura Mercier, MAC, Clinique, Smashbox and Urban Decay. Smooth a pea-sized amount over the face, leave for a few moments, then apply make-up.
ROOT TOUCH-UP KITS
If you opt to cover grey, you’re looking at a hair appointment every four weeks.
