The granite company became famous for extracting a particular rare type of granite known as ‘ailsite’ that was used to make curling stones, including the ones used by the Scottish Women’s Curling Team and Winter 2002 Olympic Gold medal winners.

The lighthouse was automated in 1990 and is now remotely monitored from the Northern Lighthouse Board’s offices in Edinburgh. The tower is listed as being of architectural interest, and in 2001 as part of the NLB’s solarisation programme banks of solar panels were erected on the roof of the former keepers’ cottages and the station was converted to solar-electric power. It shows one white flash every four seconds that is visible for 17 miles – enough for the reassuring light to be seen from the sea front at Girvan, weather permitting!
