FLIGHT PERIOD May–September, peaking June–July.

These dull-coloured relatives of the horseflies are much the most likely to bite you; they approach quietly and usually remain unnoticed until they actually bite. They are brownish-grey in colour and about 10mm long, with mottled wings that are held tent-like over the body. As is the case with most other biting flies, it is the females who bite to feed on blood before egg-laying. The larvae are little known and rarely seen, but probably live as scavengers and predators in damp, marshy soil.

HABITAT AND DISTRIBUTION Widespread and locally common in rough, damp habitats, including heaths, bogs, wet woodland and pastures, throughout the UK.

SIMILAR SPECIES There are several other similar closely related species, although this is much the most common one.
