Principle 5: Ask, What’s More Important to Me Than Praise?
The final principle for unhooking from praise and criticism is about remembering your true priorities. It centers on asking yourself a simple question: What is more important to me than praise or being liked in this situation? Here’s what a few women had to say in answer to that question:
Being useful. Being compassionate. Being truthful. Living in my own skin fully. Inspiring others. Being true to myself. Bringing new ideas to reality. Liking myself. Being known—all of me, good and bad. My peace of mind. Getting my message out. Proving it can be done. Dignity. Making real contributions. Helping those I work with suffer less. Being effective. Acting with integrity. Doing something I believe in.
For many women, both service and self-expression are more important than praise. Rachel was able to return to her photography work by refocusing on the joy it brought her but also by thinking about the people she hoped to uplift through her work. When she thought of them, she wanted to get her pictures out there, no matter what her graduate school professors thought of them. When Deb thought about the women whom a new domestic violence program could help, she found the motivation to move forward, despite her fears of how colleagues might respond to her controversial approach.
What are your answers to the question, What’s more important to me than praise?
