Recommended varieties, planting and maintenance information

• Where possible, stick to the straight species of all of these plants, as given above. However, varieties, for example of the daylily, would also be fine. If you prefer flowers of a particular colour, for example of the nasturtiums, it would also be fine to choose a variety instead, but be sure to check the height and spread of the plant, given the space restrictions.

Nasturtium, marigold, nigella, borage and chicory

• Sow seeds in spring according to the packet. Remove plants when they have died in the autumn (except chicory: just cut off dead topgrowth).

Garlic chives, daylily and pinks/carnation

• Plant in spring. Cut back dead foliage in spring/autumn.

Nigella

• Pinch out the very top of each shoot/stem when the plant is small to encourage more stems and therefore flowers. Leave the flowers and wait for the seedheads to form before harvesting and drying the seeds (see p. 168).
