In the end, no matter how or if you share your variety with other people, the process of evaluating and selecting a new favorite is incredibly pleasurable. There is nothing quite like a salad of fresh vegetables you bred yourself, or handing a loved one a full bouquet of a rose you’ve named for them. In this chapter, I’ve laid out some of the techniques I use, guidelines on approaches you can take with different types of plants. But remember, these are just guidelines. In the end, it boils down to getting out there, sizing up what you’ve got, and picking what you like best. I love dreaming up elaborate selection schemes, complete with charts and scores for various traits, but once I actually get into the garden and look at the plants, all that usually goes out the window, and I focus in on that plant or several plants that really catch my eye or nose or tongue, those special plants with that ineffable something that makes me love them. Trust your gut. As a gardener, you know what a happy, lovely, wonderful plant looks like. Find those plants, grow them in your garden, and share them with your friends.
