June 21

It’s a blue, blue summer solstice, and not just because June is so often wet and chilly in the Northwest. My first two crops of basil damped off, but that dismal failure is made up for by the garden blooming in glorious shades of blue and lavender, as is my neighbor’s overgrown iris patch. So I decide to celebrate the colors of sea and sky with a bouquet, even though the delphinium, the star of summer blues, is waiting for a little more warmth to fully open.

The vase proves a problem. Who would have thought flowers as striking as lavender allium and midnight-blue Japanese iris wouldn’t hold up to a white vase? Nope, the chalky shade bleeds the life out of these richly colored flowers. I try several more vases before settling on a plump, melon-colored vessel made by glass artist David Levi. After all, anything that holds water can be put to use as a vase, can’t it?
