Other Corrections

There are three corrections that do not fall into any category given so far, and they have been grouped together in the “other” category. On F 45r line 14 the negation seems to be added into a space. This may be the work of a different hand; the letters are too oddly written to be certain. The negation seems required by the following word which would mark a contrast between the two clauses, “The one who believes Me believes not Me, but the One who sent Me.” The is also anticipated by the double NN at the beginning of the verbal prefix. So, although there is one manuscript in Horner’s Bohairic apparatus that also omits , it seems that this is not an intentional omission but an error of the scribe that is corrected, either by the scribe himself or a later corrector.144

The second unique correction is found on F 49v line 13. Here the phrase is set off in brackets, is underlined, and has dots placed above it. Since this way of marking an error is unique among the 119 corrections made to P. Bodmer III, it seems to be done by someone other than the original scribe.

The last correction is found on F 62r line 2. Here a C seems to be added later between a N and an forming the word The difficulty is that this reading makes no sense, either with or without the C. The word appears in this manuscript as a translation of the Greek In four instances where the Bohairic text has this text has 145 But I can find no variants that justify such a reading. It is difficult to explain the rise of this correction or its original reading.
