Some artists say that acrylics dry too fast for them, but I’ve found that using an acrylic glaze instead of water to thin the paints allows them to flow better and stay moist longer. And, I like the fact that the paints do dry fast so I can keep going with a piece, especially when things are coming together well. Here are a few additional tips:

• It’s best to work dark to light, but this is not a hard-and-fast rule.

• Acrylics tend to dry darker. It may be necessary to go back into your painting to touch up the lighter areas. Using glazing medium when applying the paint and in between layers will help with this.

• If you make a mistake, just paint over it. If you make a really big mistake, apply gesso (acrylic primer) to regain your surface and start over.
