At that, Lina put her coffee mug down and without saying anything left the warm kitchen. Milo and Alessia sat in slightly uncomfortable silence.

“I’m sorry about that,” Rosa said, her cheeks still a little flushed. “It must be upsetting for you to see, Milo. I am sorry your grandmother is not . . . well, not what you might have perhaps hoped for. She is a complicated woman who does not enjoy other people’s rules. But all will be well; please don’t worry.”

“Okay,” Milo said quietly, not sure what else there was to say. He felt embarrassed and awkward and had to quell the desire to apologize for the chaos his family had caused—and was still causing.

“I hope you’re not feeling responsible for your relations,” Rosa said gently. “You’re your own person, Milo. We’re shaped by the people around us, yes, but they do not make us completely. We can always choose who we are, and we can always choose to change. That applies to both of you,” she added, reaching over the table and taking Alessia’s and Milo’s hands, one in each of hers. “You get to decide who you are and what you stand for, always remember that.”
