here is Jack? Whatâs happened?â Tilly said, panicked.
âMaybe itâs disappeared because Jack came through into the new book with us?â Oskar suggested. âAnd when the crack vanished he couldnât get home?â
âA crack that vanished?â Marcel repeated.
âYes, it was a big old crack in the sky,â Oskar said. âWe went through it and we think thatâs why we ended up in the wrong book.â
âYou see, you say it was not so bad, but you found yourselves in the wrong book, non?â Marcel said. âAnd you ended up here? How did you do that? That is not the way it is supposed to work.â
âWe got here through the Endpapers,â Tilly answered without thinking.
âBut that is not how it should go,â Colette said, looking intently at Tilly. âIf a reader goes into the Endpapers they could be lost for a long time. How did you get to here? That is what happens to the fictional people, not you.â
Tilly shrugged and tried to put a convincingly confused look on her face. âI donât know,â she said. âMy grandparents said fairy tales have different rules, so isnât it because of that?â
âPerhaps,â Colette said thoughtfully. âThey are strange places after all. And getting stranger from what we hear. It is not so good to hear that stories are getting lost, and there are cracks in the sky.â
âWe also saw a character seize up and explode, and then a new version of the same person walked in the door,â Oskar said.
âAnd a puddle of nothingness, just in the middle of a field,â Tilly added.
âA puddle of what?â Marcel repeated. âI do not understand this word.â
âI donât know how to explain it better,â Tilly said. âIt was like just ⦠Nothing. A black hole. And Rapunzel said that a prince disappeared into it.â
âPrince Charming?â Marcel said. âWhen was this?â
âNo, a different prince. We were with Prince Charming,â Tilly said.
âWell, not our Prince Charming,â Oskar chimed in. âTheyâre all called Prince Charming, arenât they?â
âHe is right,â Colette said. âMany of them are. It is just we had a lost Prince Charming fall into our Endpapers last week. We put him back in his right place, but he said that he was just walking and then suddenly he was here. I wonderââ
âSomething is not right,â Marcel interrupted. âFairy tales were always dangerous, but this is different. We will write down what you have said for our records, and we will make sure that you get home safely. Where does your father live, Oskar?â
âWe need to go back to the Faery Cabinet first,â Oskar said. âAnd give Gretchen this book back, and then we can go home. It isnât far from the bookshop, so weâll be fine from there. Thank you.â
âWe shall get you a car,â Marcel said. âFollow me.â
Marcel talked continuously about the history of the French Underlibrary as they left the office and walked along a wide corridor. âYou will see when we come up higher that we are underneath the old site of the National Library, on rue de Richelieu, in the centre of Paris.
