Chapter 4
Relevancy vs. Popularity
Big Ken: I’m going to drop a bomb on you right here. People out there reading this might not like what I’m about to say, but I’ll be willing to bet money that this will be true. If Prince dropped a brand new studio album tomorrow and Nine Inch Nails dropped a brand new studio album tomorrow, I bet you Nine Inch Nails will sell more than Prince. Nine Inch Nails is probably, as much as I hate to say it, they’re probably more relevant now than he is.
Michael: I doubt that.
Big Ken: But you’re not a supporter of Nine Inch Nails, so you don’t really know.
Michael: You’re saying they’re more relevant?
Big Ken: It’s the truth. They’re more relevant in today’s society, probably, than Prince is.
Michael: So they would get more media coverage than Prince would?
Big Ken: Yeah. I would venture to guess that. Okay, take Nine Inch Nails out, put Radiohead in that same spot. They would get more props.
Michael: Let’s stick with one, Ken.
Big Ken: They would get more coverage of their release tomorrow than Prince would.
Michael: Let me throw this in the equation.
Big Ken: Take out Radiohead, put in Coldplay. Take out Coldplay, put in – you could put in a number of groups.
Michael: Do you want to just throw in Eminem? You’re going all over the place, man.
Big Ken: I’m just saying, dog. The point is these cats – again, I love Prince more than anybody. I’m just saying, to me, he doesn’t use the tools to his full advantage. He uses it just enough to get his paper, like he did with 20Ten and I have no problem with that. He did the same thing with Lotus Flower; he got his paper. Cool.
Michael: Everybody, say it, “21 Nights in London.” (Prince did a record-breaking, sold-out 21 concerts in 21 nights at London’s O2 Arena in 2007)
Big Ken: He can still do that and still get his true supporters, his fan base. Here’s the other part of that, Mike. The true fan base, the true supporters like us, man, we will end up proliferating a lot of that stuff out even further so he’s going to get even more people that’s going to come down into the fold, more people that are going to want to know about him, more people that are going to want to buy his new stuff, more people that want to go on to hear more.
They’re going to want to go back and research his catalog. They’re going to want to go back and research the album that they didn’t get. There’s a halo effect to all this. To me, what’s cut and dried is that he is not going to get his money, so he can’t put 20Ten out and he can’t drop some old school stuff at the same time. He can. It’s his stuff. It’s his control. He has no boundaries anymore. None.
The Internet reaches everybody. He can do it all. If he couples that
