Outside, away from my dad, my anger with Kane spiked for the way he’d deliberately baited him. I let David lead me to the elevator, half glad Kane walked a pace ahead of us. Face a mask, ignoring me. As long as he ignored me, I wouldn’t explode on him in the halls.

Near the elevators, I stopped them both. “David, do me a favor and take the other elevator, please?”

David gave me an odd look, rose a brow at Kane for approval, and then Kane looked at me. Confusion crossed his face, then he smirked, and I had a feeling I knew what he thought I wanted. Ugh. He thought I wanted to jump him? Only if fucking him included a few broken ribs.

He nodded to David and the driver took one elevator while Kane led me into the other. The doors closed and he set his hands on my waist. I shoved him as hard as I could and a spike of satisfaction rose in me when he hit the wall. I probably only managed to put him that far because the elevator chose that instant to go down. I jabbed the stop button and ignored his chuckle.

“What the hell is wrong with you, Davros?”

“What did I do?” But the laughter in his eyes told me he knew exactly why I was pissed.

“You sick son of a bitch. Playing this shit show as if it’s a love affair in front of my father when you know he hates you. How dare you.”

His face went stony alarmingly fast. He crossed his arms. “Would you prefer the alternative, Anika?” His voice was a sinister rasp. “I could have had you walk a pace behind me and not look at you. Order you to bow your head and remain silent. Is that what you want?”

“No! But you didn’t have to make this whole thing so fucking awkward in front of him.”

“Oh. How would you have preferred I handled it?”

“Well…” I opened my mouth, twice, only to close it.

“Well?”

“I don’t know. There had to be another way other than to deliberately needle him. You enjoyed that, didn’t you?”

“A little, yes.”

“Why? Why do you like fucking with people’s heads?”

He reached for me, and I shoved his hand away. His eyes flashed and he grabbed my wrist. “Why?” His eyes were suddenly dark. “Because it’s what I do, Anika. It’s what I’m good at. Learn to live with it. It’s how I work.”

Why was he being so cruel? So cold? He released my wrist, flinging it away. Somehow, that dismissal felt as painful as if he’d shoved me aside. The crack in my heart split wide open.

Jabbing the button to get the elevator moving again and keeping his back to me, Kane’s voice was low, and darkly calm. “I have warned you about hitting me, Anika. More than once. There are—”

“I didn’t hit, I shoved—”

A low, scary rasp left him. “Don’t. Don’t you dare.”

“Why? What are you going to do, blister my ass?” I threw his words at him.
