Preppy Puppy Letterman Sweater
Whether chewing over library books or chasing the neighbor’s football, your pooch will look sufficiently collegiate in his varsity duds. With all that running, fetching, and chasing, you know he’s earned his letter. (See here for old-school varsity lettering or choose a more unusual lettering style here and here.)
Materials
Size 3 (3.25mm) knitting needles
Size 6 (4mm) double-pointed knitting needles (DPNs)
Size 6 (4mm) circular knitting needle
Double knit yarn in maroon (or chosen color)
Contrasting yarn in gold (or chosen color)
Round marker
Stitch holder
Darning needle
All dogs are different shapes and sizes, so instead of giving you S, M, and L options to follow, this pattern allows you to design a bespoke pullover that fits your pooch perfectly.
Before getting started, measure your dog and do some quick calculations.
First, check their chest circumference (behind the front legs and up around the body), as well as back length (from the collar to where you’d like the sweater to end). Multiply the chest measurement by 5 to gauge the number of stitches needed.
The example measurements below are Percy the pug’s:
Chest: 20 in. (51cm)—100 sts
Length: 12 in. (31cm)
Directions
This sweater is knitted from neck to tail
Using maroon yarn and size 3 knitting needles, cast on chest stitches (e.g., 100 sts for Percy)
Work in rib (k1, p1), decreasing 1 stitch at the edge of each row 16 times, which gives an overall decrease of 32 sts
Work 1 row in rib
Continuing in rib, m1 at each end of next 5 rows
Using gold yarn, m1, work in rib to end of row, m1. Repeat
Switching to maroon yarn, m1, work in rib to end of row, m1. Repeat
Switching to gold yarn, m1, work in rib to end of row, m1. Repeat
Work 5 more rows in maroon yarn, continuing with the increases to return to original number of chest stitches
Fold the ribbed V-neck at the middle with the double-striped side facing. Using the circular needle, knit the stitches on the needle together with the corresponding cast-on stitches opposite. You might find it easier to first pick up the cast-on stitches with the size 3 needle, then hold both needles alongside each other as you knit from these two onto the circular needle
Once all stitches are on the circular needle, set marker and knit 10 rounds
If you wish to knit your pet’s initial onto the front, do so here with gold yarn. If not, knit 10 more rounds
K10 before the marker, cast off 2 sts, k8, remove marker, k8, cast off 2 sts, then knit to end
Transfer the 16 sts that are between the cast-off stitches to the stitch holder
If your dog wears a harness, an optional opening can be made here for the leash attachment
(Count the number of stitches you are working on, subtract 6, then divide by 2 to get ___ sts)
Purl ___ sts, cast off 6 sts, then purl to end of row
Knit ___ sts, cast on 6 sts, then knit to end of row
Work 26 rows
Cut yarn and return to 16 sts on holder
Work 26 rows
On next knit row, k16,
