Chapter 11

HELP FROM THE KGB

WE ARRIVED IN Kandahar a few hours later, where my newfound friends the Iranian diplomats insisted on dining me royally in two nice restaurants. They then put me on the overnight luxury bus to Kabul and even paid for my ticket.

I arrived in Kabul early the next morning and checked into a cheap little hotel on the famous Chicken Street. This is where all the hippies and backpackers stopped and stayed when passing through the city. Kabul was a beautiful and exotic city, surrounded by high mountains. The city center was alive with people from around the world. People were friendly, and it was like no other place I had ever been. I began to see why everybody I had met who had ever been to Kabul liked the place so much. The centuries-old city center oozed history and culture. The newer parts just off the city center had wide tree-lined boulevards. The weather was wonderful. All kinds of fresh fruit and good food were available everywhere. It was also inexpensive, and at the moment, that was very important to me.

Despite the idyllic setting, there was tension in the air. The monarchy of King Zahir Shah of Afghanistan had been overthrown not long before in a coup d’état led by his cousin General Sardar Daoud. Troops patrolled the streets now and then, but the people could generally move about freely as they pleased. Sadly, there would soon be another coup, this time by Communist hardliners supported by the Soviets. Sardar Daoud would be overthrown, Afghanistan would be thrust into a long series of bloody wars lasting decades, and the beautiful old city of Kabul would be ravaged.

My first step was to locate the local Children of God group. I finally found them, but after only a short time with them, I sensed there was something terribly wrong. It was hard to say what it was exactly or to express what I felt in words, but something just did not seem right. It could be, I reasoned, that I felt this way because I had not had any contact with them for so long.

At first, I let my suspicions slide. I asked one of the brothers for the Mo Letters I had missed. Mo Letters were weekly leaflets, letters, and booklets containing the teachings of the leader of the Children of God, Moses David. These were published with instructions indicating whether that particular letter was for general reading, for leadership only, or for higher leadership only. The Mo Letters I had seen in my time with the Children of God in Pakistan had been the basic kind. Now, in Kabul, I was given a stack of Mo Letters to read. I was horrified. I was shaken. Most of the letters were nothing but filthy pornography, some encouraging prostitution, fornication, and adultery, while others were downright blasphemous.

I felt hurt, lonely, and most of all confused. My brain swirled in emotions.
