I hired an attorney. Kenny Hance was his name. He was a brilliant lawyer, the best in the business. It wound up costing me $50,000 in legal fees to beat a $500 rap in the Resorts’ case. Can you believe that? Not only that, but I had to fly back and forth from Vegas to New Jersey seven times because they had to take testimony from me.

In the end, I beat them, I beat the casino. They couldn’t prove I was cheating. The judge laughed at their case, what they were trying to pin on me. They made fools out of themselves. The court decided that what I was doing, which was counting cards, wasn’t a violation of the law; that is, it wasn’t cheating. I think the casinos pushed it because they were trying to send a message—we can’t ban you, but we’re going to make life miserable for you if you try to play here. So it cost me $50,000 to play their game. In the end, the truth is, I lost. I lost and the casino lost. I guess the only ones who made out were the lawyers. Kenny wanted me to file a defamation of character suit against Resorts for what they did to me. But I didn’t want to go through with it. I’d spent enough time on airplanes and inside courtrooms. There’s no action there.
