Now here I sit, within earshot of the ocean on the Vineyard, only one week after the funeral-graduation weekend. I’m spending this week gathering my thoughts, to digest, to process. It’s hard to imagine what next week will be like when we’re back in New Jersey.

I don’t know much more than this: I’ll be fine—better than fine—outside my comfort zone for a while. The strength I’ve drawn from my grandmother and from my time at Solebury won’t just evaporate; I’ll carry that with me wherever I go. Come August in my new school, I’ll be unapologetically and uneventfully out and proud to my new students and colleagues. I’ll savor being back in the classroom with students all day.

As I look at who I am today, I can scarcely connect the dots to the fearful, self-loathing teenager I once was. These days, being gay for me is no different than my eye color, my skin color, or my height. It’s just part of the fabric that makes me who I am. Those different strands of my identity have all woven together into one thread; it’s a privilege, an honor, to bring my whole, complex self into the classroom.
