DYSENTERY

Now I admit that dysentery may sound like a crappy subject, but my memories would not be complete without this one. Two of my best friends while in Nam were my second man, Tom and a top grunt, Manual. Either one could be counted on to be doing what they were supposed to at any given time. If you wanted them at your back, they would stand and die if need be.

On the fateful time period that I’m going to focus on, and it isn’t going to flatter that image, but the story must be told. Now let no one judge unless he has first had dysentery, then have at it.

The Marine Corps is a very snittery organization and great emphasis is put on discipline and no matter what the circumstances this is enforced which is very good thing. Like for instance, if by chance you must let’s say take a dump in the middle of the night and you’re in the bush what do you do? First you need to notify two or three fighting holes that you are going to be out in front of them taking a dump, good idea to tell three. Then you have to go out on the NVAs’ side of the line, dig your usual dump hole so you can bury the refuse, do your thing as quiet as possible so as not to upset anyone on either side of the perimeter, bury it, then make your way back into the perimeter in one piece.

Now try waking up with full-fledged dysentery where it takes every bit of will power that you can muster to not make a mess of yourself. That was the condition Manual found himself in and he was gritting his teeth to make it to the three fighting holes to tell them he would be out in front of the line. Problem was that by the time he was through with that task his will power was about gone, he made a desperate rush a good distance from the line, decided to forego digging the customary hole and started desperately to get his cammies down, all to no avail. The next morning at first light, there was Manuel buck-naked, waist deep in the river where we had conveniently dug in, washing out his cammies and taking a bath.

Now Tom was fast to pick up on this fact and since he too had dysentery and not someone to let an opportunity such as this pass, loudly informed Manuel that he was more like a baby than a full-fledged Marine, out there pooping his pants when he himself had dysentery and Manuel didn’t see him crapping his pants. This was all in good fun, yet I wouldn’t want to be at the receiving end.

Anyway, just as justice would have it, the very next morning guess who was out in the river washing out his cammies.... Yup Tom. His story was that he too had woke up in a very desperate situation, made
