The Assyrian economy depended on tribute from conquered peoples and from plunder gained by their armies. Northern Israel was strong and prosperous during the reign of Jeroboam II (782–753 BC), whose regency coincided with Uzziah's. After Jeroboam II died, Israel's strength declined rapidly through a succession of short-lived reigns and multiple usurpers ascending the throne.
