Bridging to Futures

A century after the industrial discovery of oil in the harbor of San Pedro Bay, port managers and city officials proudly announced the opening of a newly constructed bridge (fig. 46). High above the water, the Long Beach International Gateway bridge connects the port complex to the I-710 freeway (the “commercial spine of Southern California”).1 Boosters claimed that this $1.47 billion infrastructure project would “help define life in Los Angeles for generations.” A decade in the making, the new bridge would allow for the smooth passage of extremely large cargo ships, which had gotten so massive that the largest ones were unable to pass beneath the previous bridge except at low tide, and some did not fit at all (fig. 47).2 Engineers consulted with maritime experts to determine the likely specifications of future cargo ships, anticipating a continuing rise in cargo imports and ship dimensions. Officials repeatedly emphasized that the investment was worth the cost because it would serve the region for a century to come: “We’re thinking of this as a 100-year bridge.”3
