Gregory could barely move by the time the white-hot urges settled and the sweet scent of magic faded from the air.

Thrace lay over him, his weight almost too heavy across Gregory’s back. Gregory lifted his head from the floor where his cheek had become almost numb to the cool tiles beneath him. He groaned.

Thrace’s body shifted, and then Gregory could breathe easier, his lungs able to expand as he took in crisp, clear air.

“What the hell was that?” The words came out sounding more like an indecipherable mumble than a question.

Thrace must have understood anyway because he answered, “Sex.”

Gregory pushed up on his elbows, muscles quivering like wet madestone, and glared at Thrace. “Oh, was it now? I guess that’s why your cock was up my ass. No, you half-breed Yeeru bastard, was that some kind of side-effect of the mating thing or what?”

Thrace laughed, not sounding half as exhausted as Gregory felt. “I have no idea.”

“Shit,” Gregory said. He glanced down at his hands. “At least the itching’s stopped.”

“For now.”

“Don’t say that.”

“I’d rather be honest. You deserve to know what’s happening.”

Gregory rolled over onto his back, grunting when his skin touched the tiles that hadn’t been warmed by his belly. “You can keep your honesty to yourself for the time being. I don’t want any more of it.”

Thrace crawled over to flop down beside Gregory, and although Gregory hadn’t realized he wanted the contact until that very moment, as soon as the side of Thrace’s arm touched his, Gregory felt a deep satisfaction hum through his magic. He looked over at Thrace’s profile.

“I hate you.”

Thrace blinked up at the ceiling. “I have to say that’s not exactly how I’m feeling right now.”

Gregory clenched his teeth together but lost the battle in his head. “Damn it. By all that’s holy. I should hate you.”

Emphasis on should. He might go mad. Of all the things to scare him about this mating thing, going mad might be the worst, considering everything.

“I should hate you,” he said again, softly this time. “Why don’t I hate you?”

“I don’t know.”

Thrace reached for Gregory’s hand.

Gregory let him hold it. What did it really matter now anyway?

He took comfort in the touch and watched the mid-day sun glimmer on the day’s growth of beard shadowing Thrace’s jaw. He really didn’t understand how the whole Yeeru alternate form thing worked. He wondered if his magic confused Thrace just as much.

“I’m going to talk to someone who might know who hired Jordane, the man I took the job from.”

“Now?”

“When I feel like moving.”

“You can’t go without me.”

“That’s why I’m telling you.”

“You’ll be glad to have me along if you run into trouble.”

Gregory remembered the dark corridor and the screaming man again, then thought of his brother and all the baggage that came with him.

“Yeah,” he said, voice low. “I probably will.”
