The Challenge Is Worth the Effort

AT THE beginning of a long road trip, have you ever despaired when realizing the many hours of driving still ahead of you? Life is sometimes like that too. In the aftermath of an especially rough trial or tribulation, some Christians are similarly taken aback by the long road of recovery that lies before them. They say, “I can’t make it. It’s too great a challenge for me.” They give up—not on themselves, but on God. We must never allow ourselves to get to this point. We must persevere and move forward with the Spirit of God working within us. Why? Because the reward is always great when we are doing God’s work, especially when we are trusting him to bring us out of a profound personal or family crisis. The apostle Paul understood the importance of continued effort to rise to the challenge: “I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us” (Philippians 3:14).

Paul’s example encourages us to do just what he did: carry on the fight, persevere with passion, and face the challenge with the goal of glorifying God in mind. I must say that the reality of God’s upward calling became much more real to me during my own trek through a spiritual abyss following my father’s death. As a result of allowing God to carry me through that terrible crisis, I am now more committed than ever to facing the challenges of life because I have seen the hand of God actively and wondrously at work within me. I know the challenge is worth any effort.
