Rev. 3:20
“When you have finished the first Bible study course, I shall send you another in soul winning. In the meantime you must be the intercessors for the rest of the prisoners. For instance, you assemble together at mealtimes. Perhaps you could arrange to sit together as Christians and form prayer cells. Pray together for five minutes, or even one minute if that is all you can manage. Jesus has said, ‘Where two or three are gathered together in My name, there am I in the midst of them.’
“I know how you feel when you are alone in your prison cells after five o’clock. I myself spent four months in solitary confinement. That is the time to pray for others. Pray for your fellow prisoners, especially those to whom you have brought the gospel. Pray for the attendants and for your dear ones at home, if you still have them.
“There is much to be done for the Master, but remember, He can use only those who are pure in heart. That, too, is possible for you. Just confess your sins. Anyone who confesses his sins will find God faithful to forgive them, and the blood of Jesus cleanses from all sin. When you confess, He will give you the new heart in which He wishes to dwell. But you must never, never compromise.”
We have a moment of silence, and then we give thanks together.
“Now,” I ask, “who has given himself unconditionally to the Lord?” Fourteen hands are raised in firm and full surrender.
Fourteen gangsters, murderers! Fourteen lifers!
Fourteen despised, lost men? No; fourteen ambassadors for Christ.
Shall they one day hear the words, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant : thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things”?
Shall I see them one day, with those they have brought to the Lord?
A year later I receive a letter with some money enclosed. It is from one of the prisoners. He writes, “I have been unexpectedly set free. I have found work, and the first money I have earned in my freedom I am sending to you. Please send me a Bible. The balance of the money is for your work.
“When you spoke to us in prison, I accepted Jesus as my Savior. I served Him behind the bars, and now I plan to serve Him as a free man.”
I write to a missionary commending this former prisoner to the fellowship of a live congregation and suggesting he be put to work there for his Master. What a privilege to see some of the blessed fruit the Vine has given through the branches.
