INSIDER TIPS FROM NATURAL MAKEUP ARTIST JESSA BLADES
Jessa Blades spent years learning about makeup—at the Makeup Artistry School in Toronto and at the makeup company M.A.C.—so when she first started hearing that makeup might be a serious occupational hazard, she was a little skeptical.“I would hear there’s lead in lipstick,” she says, “and then I would hear there isn’t, which was a relief because lipstick is really pretty, and I wanted to use it on my clients.” Over time, though, she did more and more research, and became outraged at what she discovered.
“As a makeup artist, the back of my hand is my canvas. Women make choices all the time that are bad . . . like smoking or wearing high heels, but we know smoking kills, we know high heels hurt our feet. But with beauty products, we are not told that our lipstick could have neurotoxins in it.”
So down the rabbit hole she went, and it’s a good thing she did. Now, the Glamour magazine eco hero spends her time doing makeup, educating women about safe alternatives, and teaching them how to apply makeup properly. Because she has tried pretty much every brand in the naturals’ market—not to mention working with the mainstream for years—she has a better grasp than most on what works. It makes the trial-and-error game a little easier for all of us. So without further ado, here are a few tips we picked up.
