CHAPTER SIX

Zac used his arms to paddle along. It was tiring, but he knew he couldn’t take a break or even slow down.

It was already 3.15am.

The gold would leave the city in less than eight hours.

Suddenly a warning message flashed up in his night vision goggles.

ALERT! Life form approaching.

Probably another rat, thought Zac as he continued to paddle. But then two gleaming eyes rose up out of the water and stared at him. Zac’s heart pounded. That was no rat … it was an alligator!

I’m out of here! thought Zac. But if he kept paddling the alligator might grab his arm and pull him off his board. Zac really didn’t want that to happen so he quickly pulled his arms out of the water.

Then he realised he was moving anyway. The current was pulling him down the tunnel!

‘Phew,’ breathed Zac. Hopefully the wires didn’t run too much further.

But then Zac noticed something bad. The alligator was following him! And it was getting closer by the second. Then it disappeared underwater.
