Twelve

The shower was heaven compared to the coldness of the lake. Vivian wouldn’t let me go back to cabin thirteen. I wasn’t trusted enough to be the only camper wandering around camp without supervision, so not only did I not get time to prepare for the alone time with Vivian in the woods, but I was stuck in a place where we would both be naked. Gwen was right. Fate had plans for us, and this time, it didn’t need her helping hand.

The counselors’ bathroom was a fairly small room with communal showers and a couple of stalls. We each went for the private option, steam filling the room almost immediately. The pressure was awesome, but the shower gel and shampoo provided didn’t smell like roses.

“Vivian, what sort of shampoo are you using?”

“You already know the answer to that question,” she said, and showed me the bottle between the open space at the bottom of the stall, snatching it away quickly when I tried to use my foot to knock it over to my side. “Counselor privileges. Sorry.”

“You’ve got two choices. One, let me use that god-tier rose-smelling shampoo or two, face the consequences.”

“Seems to me, Emma, that your version of revenge is grumbling every minute of every day.”

“Then I’ll do the opposite.” Squirting the generic body wash onto a sponge, I stood directly under the showerhead and wailed as high as my vocal cords allowed, water surging against my face and making my voice all garbled. Almost as soon as my voice rang out, Vivian roughly knocked her shampoo bottle into my shower. “Now am I qualified enough to be a mermaid?”

“You could definitely kill someone with that voice of yours,” she murmured.

Choosing to not take offense, even though she was very quick to give in, I used the shampoo, humming beneath my breath and closing my eyes. The steam carried the rose scent all around me, transporting me to a flower shop. The other stall’s door creaked and not a second went by before the towel hanging on my stall door was whipped away.

I dared to crack open the stall door a little and peeked outside, where Vivian wore nothing but a towel. Her hair was sudsy, and it dripped down her chest and onto the floor. “I have no qualms whatsoever about walking over there au naturel and taking that towel back from you.”

She hesitated. “You wouldn’t.”

“Opening the door . . .” I bluffed, at which she dropped my towel and flung her hand up to cover her eyes. Hearing my footsteps, she squashed her hand tighter across her face. I wrapped the towel around myself and prodded her nose. “You really didn’t think this through.”

“You wanted to smell like me,” she said as an explanation.

“Yes, to be reminded of you when you’re not there,” I teased.

“The only time we spend apart most days is when we’re in bed.”

“A shame, apparently, because you wanted to see me naked.” I laughed and headed to the changing room. “Go rinse.
