CREATE IDEAL CONDITIONS

Poor, well-drained sandy soil is ideal for plants from Mediterranean climates. Cold, wet conditions in winter will encourage frost damage and rots. Soil containing brick rubble or broken concrete from building works can be used without any additives. Improve the drainage of clay soil by digging in horticultural grit or plant in raised beds.

USE YOUNG PLANTS

It is better to plant young shrubs and perennials, rather than use mature specimens, especially if you have stony ground. Young plants will adapt better to your conditions and their fine, questing roots will quickly search out water and nutrients. Do not apply any fertilisers when planting, but after planting, do water in thoroughly.

PRUNE SHRUBS ANNUALLY

Most Mediterranean plants are relatively maintenance-free, but most of the shrubs will benefit from light pruning after flowering to rejuvenate them and encourage new shoots to form. Shrubs with old or straggly growth often die prematurely, while some, such as Cistus, only live for a few years and will need replacing.
