CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Taylor

What had I done? Besides sneak out of Aaron’s bed this morning after a night I knew I’d never forget, what the hell had I done? I groaned when I unlocked the door to the main office and pushed through the door. My employee, really?

Walking back to my office, I threw my bags and purse on the chair in the corner before digging out my cell phone and putting it on my desk. He hadn’t texted or called. He had to know by now that I left. It was almost eight in the morning, but I’d heard nothing, and I didn’t get the impression that the Aaron I spent last night with would appreciate me sneaking out this morning.

I wouldn’t have expected him to be so controlling in bed, and I especially wouldn’t have expected to love it, but I had. An entire evening of not having to make any decisions. An entire evening to get out of my own head and just feel.

It had been phenomenal.

But it was a one-time thing.

Sitting down, I grabbed my phone and checked it again. Even though I knew there weren’t any messages since I’d only just looked, I still needed to confirm it for some reason. I turned on my computer, deciding to dive into my work in an effort to just forget what I’d done and stop worrying about what might come today.

Not surprisingly, I had a hard time concentrating, but I kept working until I heard the bell on the door ring and looked up. Kate moved through the door and headed for her desk. It was only another moment before she skirted around her desk and headed toward the small kitchen area near her desk. She was usually the first to arrive after me, and when she started, she used to come to my door and say good morning, to which I would say, please close my door. Then she just stopped coming to my door, and I would eventually stand and close it myself once the other agents arrived.

I glanced down at my phone and saw it was eighty thirty, meaning the others would be arriving soon, when Aaron’s words floated through my mind, “You can run a successful company without being a bitch or anyone’s best friend.” I’d been thinking about those words since he said them almost two weeks ago, but I had no idea where to begin. I did think that Kate might be the most accepting of my efforts, though.

Standing from my desk, I made my way out of my office and toward the kitchen, ignoring the little voice in my mind telling me this was the fastest way to lose control in my own company. I walked into the kitchen just as Kate poured the coffee from the pot into her own cup and added some creamer. I cleared my throat and made my way into the small room.

Kate glanced at me when I set my mug down and reached for the coffeepot. “Good morning, Kate.
