In no time, the plane reached the height for their jump. Will and Otis stood at the open door of the plane. Whoosh! The air rushed past them. Otis looked around nervously. He squirmed in his harness. I don’t know about this, he seemed to be thinking. But Will knew that all first-time skydivers are a little scared. He took a deep breath and jumped.

Did You Know?

The first record of a dog skydiving was in 1785. A French balloonist dropped his dog several hundred feet over the side of his balloon.

The minute they left the plane, Otis’s tongue came out. His ears blew back. He looked around at the scenery. He was like a dog “sticking his head out of the car window,” says Will. When they landed, Otis jumped out of his harness and ran around in circles. He wanted a treat, of course!

Not long after their first jump, Will decided to take Otis on another one. He wondered if the pug would be afraid to get into his harness this time. But Otis climbed right in. This time they did a full jump—from 13,000 feet (3,962 m) in the air! That was more than four times higher than Otis’s first jump.

Soon Otis was hooked on skydiving, just like Will. As soon as Will brought out his harness, Otis hopped in. Sometimes Otis got too excited. Will says, “The hardest part was teaching Otis not to jump into the airplane without his gear on!”
