Secret Agent Man

“What’s going on?” Bess demanded from behind Nancy.

Nancy didn’t move. She steadily returned Rex’s stare.

Rex glanced at Bess, then dropped Nancy’s wrist. “Nothing,” he said.

Nancy rubbed the skin where he’d twisted her arm. “Rex was going through your makeup case.”

“What!” Bess pushed past Nancy and set two glasses of lemonade on the dresser. She went over to her small suitcase and lifted the lid. “Thanks a lot for messing up my things. It’s bad enough you tried to drown us yesterday.”

Rex reached out his foot and kicked shut the bedroom door. “You two wrecked my boat—now you’re accusing me of trying to drown you! That takes it all!”

“Someone rigged that boat to come apart at the first good wind,” said Nancy coolly.

“Well, it wasn’t me,” said Rex. “Now I want to know what you’re doing snooping around Magnolia Mansion.”

“Snooping!” Bess cried. “In case you forgot, you are in our room and were digging through my makeup case.”

Rex gave her a cold grin. “But you’re the ones pretending to be reporters.”

Nancy tried to hide her surprise. So Mr. Legere was Rex’s “source.” That certainly did link the two of them. “Well, your partner lost no time in calling you,” she said.

“Partner!” Rex spat out. “Richard Legere called, furious that I had sent two of my friends in to spy on him. He thought I’d sent you to try to find out how much he’d be willing to pay for the place.” Rex studied the two girls a moment. “Now, who are you two?”

Nancy walked to the closet and hung up her suit jacket. She was stalling for time. How could she get answers from Rex without telling him the truth?”

“We wanted to find out which real estate agents were pressuring your aunt to sell,” Nancy bluffed. “We’re just worried about her.”

“That’s a lie,” Rex stated flatly. “I think you two are real estate agents. I think some out-of-state developer is paying you to find out how much money’s been offered for the place—in order to make a winning offer.”

“Afraid someone is going to cut you out of a big deal?” Nancy asked.

“Little lady—whoever you are—I suggest you get your facts straight before you go around accusing me,” snarled Rex. He pulled his wallet from his back pocket. “And before you find yourselves in even more trouble, I recommend you call the number on this card by tonight.”

Rex thrust a business card at Nancy and stormed out of the room.

Nancy smiled wryly as she read the card. She handed it to Bess. “It’s the number of an airport limousine service. It’s Rex’s subtle way of telling us to get lost.”

At that moment, Amelia knocked on their door once and then stuck her head inside the room. “Girls, I’d like you to come downstairs to meet my agent, Jeremiah Stone.” She chuckled mischievously. “You must do me a favor. Convince him that you really are from my fan club. That way he won’t be so furious with me about my unfinished book.
