Some of the brightest and most prolific displays in the flower garden are achieved by the inclusion of tender plants. The vibrant colours of favourites such as dahlias, salvias and verbenas can transform the smallest of gardens, adding a seasonal boost to lift the spirits. As suggested by the name, however, tender plants are not best suited to battling the elements. When the days begin to shorten you will need to bring them in from the cold and take cuttings from them to provide replacements that will flower just as profusely the following year.

Even if you are growing these plants in a sheltered environment, such as a conservatory or greenhouse – or are fortunate enough to enjoy a warmer climate all year round – semi-ripe cuttings are still a fantastic way to replenish your stock.

Keep a close eye on your cuttings when it comes to watering. Over-watering can lead to a build-up of fungus which can be harmful to the soft plant material. Therefore, a good soak from time to time will suit them much better than continued saturation.

After a few weeks the cuttings should have already begun to develop new roots. Carefully check on their progress by tapping out the pot into your hand, being careful not to disrupt the new growth. Once the roots appear well established, divide your three plants and pot them on in separate containers.

Wait until all risk of cold weather is past before you transfer your new plants to the garden. In the meantime, pinch out developing flower buds so as to produce larger, branching stems prior to planting.
