Chapter Five

The door slammed shut.

Without warning, the doorstop failed to work and the door closed so forcefully Joseph jumped. He glanced up from his computer where he was busy plugging in the numbers for payroll, but didn’t see anyone. He took off his glasses, ones he only needed for work, and rubbed his eyes. Perhaps he needed a little break. The last thing he wanted to get was an eye-strain headache that lasted all day.

He stood up and stretched muscles that had grown stiff from being hunched over his keyboard. The men always seemed to have a thousand receipts he had to plug in and the process could be tedious. Thankfully he only had to do this twice a month.

Joseph walked over to his door and opened it, wedging the stopper back under it to hold it open. He really should get this fixed. He worked in a construction company, for fuck’s sake! Surely one of the men knew how to fix a door from swinging closed.

Leaving the office, he waved at Casey, the receptionist, as he headed for the kitchen. He needed coffee to get his thinking cap back on. Luckily the coffee pot was half full so he poured himself a cup and stuck it in the microwave to heat it back up before going back to his office.

The door was open but as soon as he stepped through he came to a stop. His chair was on top of his desk. Confused, he looked around but didn’t see anyone. He backtracked until he saw Casey again.

“Did you do that?” he asked, pointing to his office.

“Do what?” she asked.

He studied her face but saw only confusion shining back. He shook his head and reentered his office. His chair was back on the floor. Joseph took a deep breath and cautiously approached his desk. He sat his coffee down before circling around to study his chair. It was an ordinary office chair, on wheels, and he bent his knees to lift it up. It was heavy as fuck and the wheels spun around, making noise. He set it back down.

How did it get on the desk without making a sound? He would’ve heard it. Wouldn’t he? Cautiously, he sat down. Waited. He felt foolish waiting for something odd to happen so he shook his head and took a drink of his coffee.

The picture of him and Tom lay face down.

Okay, someone had to be fucking with him. He and Tom were up front about their relationship and always told new hires they were going to be working for a gay couple. Most men didn’t care, and once they saw Tom was just as willing to get dirty as them, well, they’d never had any problem. It seemed hard to fathom that any of the men would play a prank on him now, especially since they were supposed to get pay checks tomorrow.

Joseph glanced at his watch. He had to get payroll sent in by three or no one would be getting paid.
